He said he doesn't remember much — except that his dad was pretty intense.

This year's tournament opens Saturday at Latrobe Legion-Keener Field, and Hempfield East — now led by Ron Frye — will play in the first game against the Indiana County champion Blairsville at 10 a.m.

"Having my dad as the coach is a benefit," Frye said. "He's been there, and he knows what to expect."

Ron Frye, whose team is on a 22-game winning streak, said he took Latrobe to the Region 7 tournament four times.

"The key in these tournaments is playing fundamental baseball," he said. "We've done a good job playing sound defense and getting clutch hitting all season."

Unity coach Ed Guzik thought his team's season was over after it lost to Hempfield East in the District 31 championship series. But because the Central Penn second-place team couldn't participate and no other team from the league could play, region director Jim McKee put Unity in this tournament. It will play Somerset at noon at Derry High School.

Latrobe, the host, will play Marion Center at 4 p.m. State College faces Bedford at 1 p.m. at Legion Keener.
